Thicker trousers like the Arc'teryx Gamma LT, REI Co-op Activator 3.0, and Outdoor Research Cirque are perfect for alpine, shoulder, and light winter usage. Thickness affects the durability and tear resistance beyond temperature. We had no problems brushing against and squeezing between boulders and bushes on the path with softshell trousers like the Columbia Royce Peak, prAna Halle, and prAna Stretch Zion. Despite their weight, the Marmot Arch Rock and OR Ferrosi is durable. Summer trousers like the Columbia Silver Ridge are more tear-prone and should be limited to casual hiking and camping.
Convertible and Roll-Up Pants
Convertible trousers are popular with year-round hikers and outdoor enthusiasts since they zip off and become shorts. The benefits are obvious: A 2-in-1 design allows leg ventilation without additional apparel. Many of our "best of" trousers are convertible.
Despite their versatility, convertible pants are only for some. Despite their style, zip-off pants aren't as practical as you may imagine. Extra zippers are bulky and difficult to operate. A baggier pant is generally the result of accommodating zipper pinch spots. Even with low-profile zippers, the Kuhl Renegade is thicker than a typical hiking trouser. Thus, roll-up pants are growing in popularity for men and women. You don't need zippers—just a low-profile button and tabs to fasten the pant legs—and you get many of the ventilation advantages of a zip-off in a 3/4 length.
Crossover Hiking/Everyday Pants
Hiking pants dominate this list. However, we like hiking pants that may be worn daily or for trips. Kuhl and Patagonia, depending on the style, make good daily trousers.
